Engine lubricant
The V12 HDi FAP in the TEAM PEUGEOT TOTAL's 908 uses QUARTZ INEO ECS technology, used as both first fill and service oil by PEUGEOT engines. This lubricant technology, with its origins in standard production vehicles for the public, is such performant that it has been able to be adapted for the extreme conditions of the event reputed to be most demanding in the world for engines : the Le Mans 24 Hours!
Diesel fuel
TOTAL ACS (Additives and Special Fuels) supplies the fuels for the 908 practice sessions. To prepare for the new fuel regulations, the possibility of using fuels which are even more environmentally friendly is being studied, such as TOTAL EXCELLIUM, and even a BioDiesel.
Universal joint grease
The universal joints are subjected to high temperatures in competition which may reach 150°C. The TOTAL grease coating the universal joints plays a fundamental role in dissipating the heat; in spite of the temperature, it must not harden, in order to prevent seizing.
Timing system and valves
When the Peugeot 908 V12 Diesel engine is running at full speed, it is at almost 6,000 rpm, which means almost 100 revolutions per second, with the timing system actuating the valves almost 50 times per second.
Braking bearing
The brakes become red hot at temperatures in the order of 900°C. The heat is removed by the air that passes through the hub inside which there is a bearing running at temperature in the order of 150 to 180°C. The way of coping with these extreme temperatures is to lubricate the system with grease, specially developed to reduce the coefficient of traction and thus limiting the temperature.
Piston and connecting rod
The piston-connecting rod assembly weighs a few hundred grams, but at almost 6,000 rpm the thrust on the crankshaft is 2.5 to 3 tonnes.

Spectrometry
Throughout the year, TOTAL ACS conducts oil analyses in the laboratory to monitor any changes and wear in the V12 HDi, thanks to the experience gained in F1.
Turbo compressor
In a turbo as the one of the 908, rotation speeds of 160 000 rpm can be achieved. Inside the turbo- compressor, the temperature varies from 140 to 250°C. The lubricant must have a good shear resistance and very good thermal protection !
Brake fluid
The brake shoe temperature is very high : it can reach or exceed 300°C. We must make sure the brake fluid does not boil. The boiling point must be very high so that the brake pedal does not feel spongy. And the driver can retain complete confidence in his braking circuit and also in his car.
Drive shaft lubricant
The 908 gearbox has to handle exceptional torque (1,200 Nm), higher than a F1 ! TOTAL provides PEUGEOT SPORT with a lubricant designed for competition conditions, TOTAL TRANSMISSION LS 75W-140.
Fuel saving
TOTAL QUARTZ INEO ECS is a Fuel Economy lubricant. More fluid, Fuel Economy lubricants allow to reduce the frictions inside the engine. Fuel Economy lubricants also contain friction modifiers additives. They reduce the friction and the wear by intervening between surfaces and so avoiding the metal against metal contacts.
Longevity of the dpf
The Peugeot 908 engine lubricant uses the philosophy of the QUARTZ INEO ECS formula, with a very low ash contents in order to prevent Diesel Particulate Filter clogging.
